Sound Control Standard

Install fiberglass batt or blown cellulose (A) in floor system. 6″ batt or cellulose depth  (A) will muffle footsteps above and make loud speech faintly heard and conversational speech usually inaudible.

Typical Applications: Typical home to deaden sound. Caution: using insulation in a floor system will require separate zones for heating and cooling.

Sound Control Upgraded

Install 6″ fiberglass batt or cellulose (A) and resilient channels (B) for drywall. The addition of resilient channels adds 3-5 STCs or up to 12 decibels. This method will make loud speech usually inaudible.

Typical Applications: Between apartment floors or a home entertainment center.

Sound Control Level 3

Install 6″ fiberglass batt or cellulose (A), resilient channels (B) adding another layer of drywall (C) and a Mass Loaded Vinyl noise barrier deadens sound to above 50 decibels (loud shouting cannot be heard).

Typical Applications: To isolate a recording studio.
