Insulation Jobsite Efficiency: Plan Your Approach to Vacuuming an Attic Space
Vacuuming an attic in patterns can be an effective way to ensure that you cover the entire space and remove as much dust and debris as possible. Here are some tips on developing a process for vacuuming an attic:
Start by clearing out any large objects or debris that may be in the way. Sometimes, if there is a considerable amount of debris, have a person go ahead of you, picking out the garbage, while you extract.
Mentally divide the attic into smaller chunks. Breaking down a large attic will go much faster, mentally, and will keep you from drifting around, helping you go much faster.
Center yourself between two or three runs. This way you move less when going from run to run and you are able to work the same area more quickly.
- If the attic is a combination of batts and loose-fill, roll (or vacuum away) the batts first. Then remove the loose fill. Trying to suck loose-fill off a batt will just slow down the process as you fight the batt material clogging the hose.
These are just some quick, fast ideas to help you become faster at extracting old insulation.
